Cattery Renovation Grant -- Tuesday October 27th, 2009
Cats Galore was awarded a $5,000 grant from Petco Foundation in October, 2009. Funds are to be used for renovating the shelter cattery. Renvations will result in a shelter with vastly improved ventilation, improved sanitation, decreased stress for the cats, and reduced spreading of disease.
Cattery to be Renovated -- Thursday October 1st, 2009
As of October 1, 2009, our capital campaign begins. Our goal is to renovate the shelter cattery to reduce stress, reduce incidence of disease, to improve sanitation, and to improve ventilation and odor control in the shelter.
Specifically we intend to:
1. Replace non-openable windows with windows that can open to allow fresh air into each cat room which should decrease incidences of disease.
2. Out of 3 existing open rooms, divide the rooms up into 10 smaller rooms so that cats can be housed in smaller numbers in individual rooms instead of too many cats in a few large rooms.
3. Install outdoor enclosed areas for each cat room with a cat door into the indoor room.
4. Install tiles in all cat rooms up to four feet high to ease the task of cleaning walls and improve sanitation.
5. Place rooms such that each opens into a center indoor area so cats can be held either in their outside enclosure or in the center indoor area while their regular room is cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis. Currently the cleaning is done with the cats in the same room, which is far from ideal.
6. The room closest to the main entry door to the shelter will be used as an adoption visitation room and will serve as the office.
7. One of the back smaller rooms will be used as a quarantine room for incoming cats.
8. The center indoor area of the back main room will serve as the treatment area, where cats can be groomed, medicated, or examined, etc. The center indoor area of the other main room will double as storage area and area to hold cats while their regular room is cleaned.
9. An insulated shed outside the main shelter (currently used for storage) which is complete with electricity, air-conditioning and heating will be used to house some of the feral cats that are not likely to adopt. We will need to plumb water into the shed to ease cleaning. A large area outside the shed will be enclosed so the cats have room to run and play.
We will need lots of volunteers with carpentry and tiling skills to help. So if you know anyone good with building, see if you can get them to donate a day or two to assist us with these changes.
Petco Foundation has given us $5,000 to get started, so let's get rolling!
Honda Generator Donated -- Wednesday May 20th, 2009
A $2500 Honda Generator was donated to Cats Galore for emergency use in case of flooding, windstorms, or power shortage. As the shelter dependis on water pumped from a well, in a power shortage water supplies are cut off. The shelter is heated and air-conditioned by electricity, so with this generator heat and cooling can be continued in case of a power outage as well.
